The city of České Budějovice (Czech for Budweis) is not as heavy with tourists as Prague, and boasts a lovely central square (which actually is a square, not a rectangle) lined by meticulously renovated historical buildings. Once in Budweis, we highly recommend making a 10-kilometre trip to picturesque Hluboká Chateau (often referred to as Hluboká Castle) as well as the town of Český Krumlov (20 km). The old part of the town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering picture-postcard cobbled streets along which stylish traditional restaurants are strewn. Perched on top of a hill towering from the River Moldau banks is Český Krumlov Castle, the second most expansive castle in the country. We also recommend a trip to Holašovice, an exceptionally complete and well preserved example of a traditional central European village. Holašovice, which is situated 17 km west of Budweis, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
